"It is the white bees that are swarming"

"Do the white bees choose a queen?"

"Yes"

"She flies where the swarm hangs in thickest cluster"

"Many a winter's night, she flies through town"

"And peeks through each and every window"

"And they freeze in such wondrous manner"

"That they look like crystal flowers"

The snow flakes grew larger and larger,

'till at last they looked just like great white fowls.

Suddenly they flew to one side as the large sled stopped.

and the person who drove it rose up.

It was a lady of dazzling whiteness.

She was tall and of slender figure,

and her cloak and cap were of snow.

It was the Snow Queen

Alas, the tale you are about to hear is not about our chilly Queen.

The beginning

Some time ago, longer than it may seem, there was a small village. Just between two tall mountains, at the shore of a vast lake cornered by pine trees, this village prospered. It was not a large village, but everyone helped each other. And in this village lived a boy. You could say he was just like any boy, but that would be a lie. For this boy was special. See his father was an Elven prince who had tragically fallen in love with a lonesome human peasantgirl. The two had plans to run away together to start a new life with their newborn son. Alas, the duties of the Prince pulled him away, leaving the peasantgirl to care for her child by her self. And this child was a special boy indeed.

The years rolled by and though life wasn't easy, the mother and her child were content. She worked with the baker and he helped. And when sun went down, they all gathered 'round the fire to listen to the Old Lady's tales. They were often tales of knight battling with horrid beasts, but one cold winter night, she told a different tale. "Have you ever heard the sorrows of the Snow Queen?" she had asked with shaking heads as reply. And so she went on by telling how the Snow Queen was a force to be reconned with, commanding the winds and the cold. But she also spoke of her sorrows; how all the Snow Queen ever wanted was to be a mother. And that all the children who were lost in winter storm were taken by her. It was a frightening tale indeed. And though everyone parted with a smile, the story would go on to inspire them all.

How I wish this tale was a happy one. How easy it would be to tell how the village prospered foreverafter, but alas it is no such tale. For the winter is cold and harsh, and the night is long and full of terrors. The Snow Queen's despair had kissed our young peasantmother's stillyoung lips and she was dying. The morning rays shone through the window to greet the mother's palewhite skin. And her son, crying at her side. Summergreen eyes meeting icy blue with a smile before drifting off to a strange new land. And a tender kiss from a mourning son as his mother left this world. Tears rolled down the poor boy's face, freezing as they met with ice cold floor. And out he went, through the door. Shouting in the air. Cursing all that is good and warm.

Now's where one would expect a friendly embrace to console our tragic hero who thought to battle the forces of nature. But where once friendly eyes and warm embraces were found, now only cold judgment was seen in its place. Those who once his life he shared with, now turned shoulder cold. What was this world he thought he knew? Where were the friendly baker and is old ma'? Why had those who laughed at his side, turned cold so sudden? He realised not that he was orphan. He was no ones child nor brother, no one to take care of him. And though the village helped each other, no one could afford another mouth to feed if it meant no help in return. And what help was an orphan child to a busy baker?

But a glimmer of hope remained for lo! there in the snow, a tiny shimmer. Our now orphan boy went closer, brushing the snow away. And there in the snow, an icy mirror of such beauty and grace it was fit for a queen. And the boy recalled the tale of the Snow Queen, a force of nature who longed nothing more than for a child at her side. And now he was a child who longed nothing more than for a mother at his. But where would one find such a mysterious a queen? Reaching for the mirror he cried; "With my mother parted from this world, you are my last comfort". And with that, the mirror seemed to spring alive. Reflections of landscapes flew by as if skimming through a book. He figured the images would lead him to the Snow Queen, and for 12 days and 12 nights he wondered through the winter worlds. Across the froze lake, through the spiky forest, past the twin mountains, through the frozen caves, across the snowy plains, and past the broken graves.

Though a sad tale, this story is not just that. Through a biting blizzard the boy now travelled. Arms shielding his face as though protecting against the icy breath of a dragon. His fingers and toes like ice, he could no longer feel them, his hair had stuck in a frozen disaster, and his clothes were so stiff only a mason could move them. This seemed to the boy to be the end. And as he fell to his knees, the storm made a sudden retreat. Cold and starving, the boy was near death. But right before his eyes gave up, he spied a palewhite face of radient beauty.
"Mother" he cried as he driften away.

And as he fell into the abyss, he could see each memory he'd shared with his mother. All those happy days, and the sad. And just as he would leave his body, a familiar scent pierced his frozen nostrils. Hot onion soup. One of his favourites. As the steamy smell of the new brewed soup found its way into the body of the boy, he began to wake. Eyelids slowly sliding up to let his gaze meed a frozen roof. Then his eyes slid down to face the soup and he rose from the hard bed. Pelts were laid out to keep him warm, and the soup was neatly placed on a frozen pedistal in a silver bowl. But there was no one around, and so he was reluctant to touch the soup for his mother had taught him better. But a soft voice spoke thusly; "Fear not. Eat". Those short words was all that the boy needed.

After some time, it was as if someone had let a window open for a cold snowy wind made its way into the room, and the boy hugged the pelts tight. As the wind died down, there stood a person in the room. It was a lady of dazzling whiteness. She was tall and of slender figure. And her cloak and cap were of snow. It was the Snow Queen. She greeted the boy with a smile that would be warm were in not for her otherwise cold exterior. With a hand reached toward the boy, she blinked with her large, whte lashes,  and she spoke: "Welcome home"

And that is how our poor orphan boy found a new home.
